Adult Sailing Lessons

Sail Salem offers two levels of classes for adults. These two classes combined will teach adults to be completely competent and comfortable on a keel boat. Each Session includes 12 hours of classes.

Don’t have your own boat? No worries, when you are done with classes, you can rent our boats at Sail Salem! Become a member, and continue to improve your sailing skills and enjoy the water with friends.

Adult Sailing Level I

This class is geared towards the complete novice. If you have never sailed, or have sailed a bit, but have not had any formal instruction and want to know more about the basics, this is a great place to start.

Class meets 4 times for 3 hours each. Classes available to fit all schedules.

During the class we will cover the following topics in a combination of instruction on land and on water.

• How to steer the boat
• How to Tack the boat
• Rigging
• Boat Parts
• Points of Sail
• Sail Trim
• Mooring
• Securing of boat
• Jibing
• Knots: 2 half hitches, cleat hitch, bowline, square knot

Adult Sailing Level II

This class picks up with Level I left off. Students will build on what they learned and spend time practicing their sailing skills and knowledge. Prior attendendance at the Level I course or comparable experience is required.

Class meets 4 times, 3 hours each.

In the class we will cover advanced topics such as those listed below as well as practicing what was learned in Level I.

• Reefing
• Overboard recovery
• Docking
• Basic Chart Reading
• Right of way rules
• Boat Parts
• Improve Boat handling skills

Basic Keelboat

Have 4 full days free and want to immerse yourself in learning sailing? This class combines the Adult Level I and Adult Level II in a series of full day sailing seminars taught over 4 days.

Womens’ Sailing Night

This year we will be offering a sailing night dedicated to women. The format will focus on cooperative teaching of sailing. The sessions will be appropriate for novice and experienced sailors alike. Team Building

Let our sailing staff tailor a team building outing for you or your company. We can work with any size group to come up with an approriate outing. Please contact us for more info.

Our programs are really flexible, our instructors are experienced and well trained, and our location on the North Shore makes us the most convenient place to learn how to sail North of Boston.
