Great Support Tuesday Night
Thank you everyone who showed up Tuesday night for the City’s public hearing on the barracks. It was great venue to share our ideas about the Community Boating in Salem. The City got a great chance to see how much support there was for a Community Boating Center on Winter Island.
The Salem News ran a great article on page two today as a result of the great turnout. You can read the article here if you did not get a chance to get a paper.

We really appreciate everyone coming out to show their support. We are off to a great start. There is a lot of work ahead, and many more meetings.
Please keep your eyes on this website, and please email any of us if you would like to discuss Sail Salem further.

Community Boating in Salem — Important Meeting
Dear Friends,
I would like to share with you information about a great new
organization founded to benefit the children of the City of Salem.
With the help of several people, we have incorporate Sail Salem,
Salem’s Community Boating Center. The charter of this 501(c)(3)
non-profit organization is to provide expanded access to the water for
all members of the City of Salem, and to promote the sport of sailing
and the ecology of Salem Sound by introducing the children of Salem to
sailing, through free sailing lessons.
Several members of the City Government have encouraged us in this
endeavor and are supporting our efforts to make Winter Island the home
of Sail Salem. There is an important planning meeting the evening of
February 13th at 7:00 PM at 120 Washington Street, 3rd Floor . At this
meeting, the city will be soliciting proposals for renovating, and
utilizing the former Coast Guard barracks on the South West side of
the island. This building has been left unused for decades.
However, it is of sound construction, and the city is discussing
renovating the building and developing a multi-use facility, including a community boating center.
We need you to come to this meeting and show your support for using
this building as the home of a new community boating center—Sail
Salem.
Community Boating Centers have been thriving for the past several
decades in the United States. They represent the most rapidly growing
sailing organizations in the nation. In Boston alone, the community
sailing centers train over 3000 children a summer how to sail. They
provide open public access to the waterfront and boats for rent for
community members.
One of the greatest attractions of living in Salem are the beautiful
waters of Salem Sound. With your help, we can make sure that everyone
in the city has access to these waters.
Please turn out the evening of February 13th at 7:00 PM at 120 Washington Street, 3rd Floor . We are not asking for money (yet!), just an
hour and a half of your time to show the numbers of people that
support this idea.
